use more appropriate alternatives to malloc()
Use calloc to request cleared memory instead. Kernel and libc conspire to make this more efficient. Also, replace one malloc() + strcpy() with strdup(). Signed-off-by: Alan Jenkins <alan-jenkins@tuffmail.co.uk>
